Your first month: what to observe before changing everything

An opening period produces questions faster than answers. A simple observation routine helps a new owner separate a one-off incident from a problem that deserves a change.

Choose a few things to record

Keep a practical log of drink orders, remakes, ingredient shortages, customer questions, and the steps that slow service. Record observations consistently enough to compare one shift with another.

Ask the team what was difficult and where an instruction was unclear. A repeated question about sweetness settings may point to the recipe card or ordering flow rather than an individual mistake.

Make one change you can evaluate

If a topping station causes extra movement, adjust its placement within the approved layout and observe the next comparable service period. If one drink is frequently remade, check its recipe and portion tools before redesigning the whole menu.

Write down what changed and when. Avoid claiming that an improvement came from a new machine if the menu, staffing, and station layout all changed at the same time.

Build a routine before expanding

Review the records at a regular interval and choose the next small improvement. Keep useful changes, reconsider those that do not help, and document the current procedure.

The first month is also a chance to identify what you enjoy and what needs support: recipe development, training, ordering, customer service, or equipment coordination. Assign ownership so important work does not depend on one person remembering everything.

Make it work for your station.
