Case study: designing a focused six-drink opening menu

Fictional case study: A fictional first-time owner wants to open with twelve flavors, four toppings, and two cup sizes. The exercise is to reduce preparation complexity while preserving a useful range of choices.

The starting problem

In this scenario, several proposed drinks need an ingredient used nowhere else. The owner has limited preparation space and a team still learning the core recipes. A large menu could make it harder to identify what sells and what creates waste.

The planning goal is six distinct drinks built around a manageable ingredient set. Six is the choice for this exercise, not a recommended limit for every business.

The proposed approach

The owner groups recipes by tea base, then looks for ingredients that serve more than one drink. The proposed range includes classic black milk tea, jasmine milk tea, a roasted tea option, two fruit teas, and a brown-sugar variation.

Before launch, each drink gets a measured recipe, a clear description, and a test using the actual cup and topping portions. The owner also reviews whether one initial cup size would make preparation easier.

What would count as a useful result?

The test would track ingredient usage, remakes, service difficulties, and which choices customers understand. Expansion would depend on those observations, not on an assumed sales increase.

The lesson from the scenario is to organize variety around ingredients and workflow. No customer outcome or financial result is claimed; use the approach as a planning exercise for your own menu.
